Overview

Black Peak Expedition Plans

The pastoral uplands of Uttarakhand’s alpine heights serve as starting and ending sites for many of the region’s most spectacular hikes. These fertile grassy uplands are known as the Bugyals, and they are hidden away in the folds of the mountains. Shepherds move their flocks there during the summer months, before the snow covers them and makes them unusable. Dayara is a Bugyal that is not as well known as some of the others and can be reached from Uttarkashi by way of a walk that is quite short and crisp; yet, this walk is one that results in spectacular rewards. In the native language of the area, the word “Dayara” refers to a circular parcel of land that mirrors the hoop-shaped grassy turf of this Bugyal. It is bordered by dark oak and maple trees, and beyond the green reaches, a bright snowline of the Bandarpoonch and other ranges can be seen in the distance. A meandering stroll through Dayara’s undulating meadows will lead you out of the world frames of its verdant ecology and into the hush-inducing solitude of the oak forests. Somewhere in the distance, a breathtaking peak view panorama will be slowly revealing itself to you as well. You may get glimpses of the Gangotri group of peaks, Srikanth peak, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak at various points throughout the whole line. These peaks can be seen from a variety of vantage points. On the fourth day of the expedition, we reach another one of the journey’s high points as we climb up to Dayara Top, which is 12,100 feet higher than our Dayara campground. You may get reach the convergences of numerous neighbouring meadows, including the Giddara Bugyal, by walking up the ridge.
